WikiApiary:Handling duplicate names

WikiApiary uses its main namespace mostly for pages to define each individual wiki site that it is monitoring. The name of the article page here on WikiApiary is the name of the actual external wiki site. There are however, times where there are multiple wiki sites with the same name. The most common reason for this are a series of multiple language versions of the same wiki, such as Wikipedia, Ekopedia, Hurraki, JurisPedia, OpenSUSE, Psiram, WikiMANNia, Wikimini, and many more! There are however, times where two completely independent wikis have the same name. This page outlines how to deal with those conflicts.

When these naming issues or conflicts occur, it is preferable to still have an article page here on WikiApiary for the name to provide a point for visitors to find the individual wiki site they are looking for; on most other wiki sites, this is called 'disambiguation'. To do this here on WikiApiary, create an article page with the name in conflict, and place the multisite template at the top of its edit box. This template expects a parameter to indicate the type of 'multisite' it is, either lang or name. See Template:Multisite for more information.

Multiple languages

The ISO 639-1 two-letter language code (or if necessary, the ISO 639-2 three-letter language code) is used to distinguish these individual wiki sites. To correctly name an appropriate article page here on WikiApiary, place the two- or three-letter language code in parenthesis, after a space, behind the primary wiki site name in the page title.

Different sites using same name

If two or more unrelated and / or independent wiki sites have the same name, the domain name is used to differentiate them, and is placed in parenthesis behind the wiki name in the page title.

Examples

1. SpieleWiki — specifically SpieleWiki (spiele.j-crew.de) and SpieleWiki (spielewiki.org);
2. Fanonpedia — specifically Fanonpedia (ShoutWiki) (the original fork from Wikia, hosted by the ShoutWiki wiki farm), and Fanonpedia (Miraheze) (current home, hosted by Miraheze).

Actual duplicates

Many wiki sites are known with two or more names (or URLs - which may or may not be an official 'mirror'), which can result in duplicate pages. We attempt to identify those automatically by comparing statistics: Category:Duplicate website.

We usually resolve a duplicate this way:

1. check which article page was created first, and what is the correct name;
2. check which actual wiki site was created first;
3. leave (or move) the oldest article page (or the oldest actual wiki site) to the correct name;
4. redirect the other article page name to the main one;
5. delete all the sub-pages of the redirected page;
6. add the API URL of the duplicate to the 'Additional API URL(s)' field of the target ('Advanced' tab of the form edit).
