Farm talk:Wikia

From WikiApiary, monitoring the MediaWiki universe

How to deal with language versions of Wikia wikis?

For example, I see that there's Farm:Deceased_YouTubers_Wiki, but is this the correct way to go about it? Just want to check before I do anything big. --Coloradohusky (talk) 04:29, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

I'd say Farm is reserved for Wikia / Fandom on those wikis. However, Farms have a "Parent Farm" property that may benefit from this oganizational tree as well. I don't know what would be the best practice here... --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 10:10, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
I'd say just create a sub-farm to Wikia for this. This has been done in the past a couple of times and I think it can indeed help organizing data here. I am however not sure if it should already be done for 2 wikis. Lets start out with 5 and see how many farms we get. --[[kgh]] (talk) 21:26, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
I also support creating subfarms. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 01:36, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

Consider renaming to Farm:Fandom or not?

As they announced in c. 2019, they finally moved all trademark portions to be Fandom, and totally dropped the former Wikia name. I don't know whether there's technical problems hold up us to do so. Anyway, this is currently the only Farm page categorized by Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 01:55, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

Fandom is the current 'brand', but a considerable amount of their code and URL schemas (including logos and database dumps) still contain or refer to Wikia. And if you rename to 'Fandom', it is bowing to the whim of 'recentism'. One of the complaints on Wikipedia is that they concentrate on the 'now' (which may be only a small period of its entire history) and thus ignore the majority of its history. The other problem with changing to Fandom is what happens when they go for a further rename?
I am also not sure if a global rename of all wiki site articles would cause issues with the server - which is often already at breaking point. It would need a bot to run to make the changes, and would need to be done in limited sessions.
Happy to follow any agreed consensus either way. Rgds Sean, aka Hoof HeartedWikiIndex staff, 'crat, SMW admin, sysoptalk2HH 15:31, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
I'm fine with renaming. However, this site is struggling to load any pages since a lot of time, which would make this task very tedious. I think we may have more interesting edits to do than following the branding renames of a wiki farm in the current wiki status. --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 21:03, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
If we want to go with the rename, I can add it to my bot to do the rename when it updates the page for any other reason. --Shufflertoxin (talk) 08:25, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
Please bear in mind the new WikiApiary:Bot guidelines‎; and note that bots should be (severely) throttled to only be run once per minute! Being as Wikia / Fandom themselves claim to host more than a quarter million wiki sites, with an unknown number of those listed here on WikiApiary (see Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded), I fear that renaming the farm on such a huge number of articles would toast our server into nuclear oblivion. So I would urge putting this on hold - until we get official approval from Mark H.
And to pick up on thoughts of Ciencia Al Poder - I think it is more important to improve descriptions, subject tags, and other missing information on all articles. Another point is to pose a simple question - that being: 'Will a global rename of Wikia to Fandom add any additional value and / or knowledge of those existing article to users of WikiApiary?' My own personal opinion is 'no', simply because anyone who uses WikiApiary (especially when looking at farms, rather than just single wiki site articles) will be very well aware that Wikia and Fandom are one and the same.
