MediaWiki updated to 1.21.2

Just as the subject says, I just updated to 1.21.2. I also did a fresh git pull of all extensions. Error log is clean and doesn't show anything having big issues, but if you see anything acting poorly please let me know. 🐝 thingles (talk) 14:18, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

More than 9K active wikis tracked

Today WikiAPIary exeeded the 9,000 wiki mark! --[[kgh]] (talk) 17:39, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

I've been meaning to add all sorts of counts and leaderboards. This prompted me to add Property:Has website number. It looks like Flehite Wiki is wiki number 9,373 in WikiApiary! (This includes sites marked defunct, which I think is probably fine. Otherwise the number will change over time and that might be confusing.) 🐝 thingles (talk) 17:26, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
Actually Primus Database is 9,413. :-) 🐝 thingles (talk) 17:29, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, you are right. I slightly changed the subject line to make things more precise. :) --[[kgh]] (talk) 08:09, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

MediaWiki Installer Pinging to other sites

Mark and I have had a couple of emails on the idea of the MediaWiki installer being able to send a ping that sites like WikiApiary could receive to automatically add new wikis. I think it's a stellar idea. Today Mark put the bugs in to get this rolling. It would be great if others could add votes, comments and such to show there is definitely support for this.

Thanks! 🐝 thingles (talk) 00:31, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Good that this idea gets resumed. Will do! --[[kgh]] (talk) 08:10, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Feedback: Remove Feature Website vote

I've been thinking for a while to remove the featured Web site vote capability and Property:Has featured website vote along with it. The original idea for it was really based on when WikiApiary had fewer sites. I also think there are better ways to highlight some websites over others. The property isn't actually used for anything right now, and I see people incrementing it and probably don't know what it should do, if anything. Plus, auditing it for no double voting is a pain even if we did know what to do with it. Anyone think this is a terrible idea? 🐝 thingles (talk) 22:36, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Well, I think it was originally meant to be an operator option only, too. I also use(d) this feature to flag wikis that I really like. However, I also put them to my watchlist which serves as good for this reason. I think featuring wikis like this may go. --[[kgh]] (talk) 06:46, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
Removed the autoedit button from Template:Website. Will purge the property once the values have drained. 🐝 thingles (talk) 21:16, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
Done. 🐝 thingles (talk) 02:40, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Honor robots.txt

By the way, per the action on NSindex, I do have in my plans adding a feature to audit bee (maybe bumble bee too) to pull robots.txt files and make sure WikiApiary isn't blocked. There is a Python robotparser module that should make this pretty easy. 🐝 thingles (talk) 22:38, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Perhaps you just add this to AuditBee and allow it to tell BumbleBee if it is ok to go or not by setting a respective property. --[[kgh]] (talk) 06:39, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
That's the way to do it. Only worry about doing it just there is it would take 2 months for Audit Bee to see any changes. :-\ 🐝 thingles (talk) 21:17, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
Hmm..., since AuditBee and BumbleBee are telling where they come from it seems sufficient to me to provide information about its behaviour in this respect on their home pages as well as allowing for an immediate opt-out by dropping a note on the respective talk page. Since we are not talking about masses here ... I guess the more straight forward solution for wiki sysadmins would be to disable the API anyway, but that's another story. --[[kgh]] (talk) 08:06, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Audits fixed

I (again) had Concept:Websites expired audit messed up and just fixed it. Seems I also had Concept:Websites never audited messed up as well, fixed as well. Net effect was sites weren't being audited or re-audited right. Audit Bee will start going through the queue again now. 🐝 thingles (talk) 12:22, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

According to Project:Operations there are 470 sites never audited, and 5,679 sites with expired audits. 🐝 thingles (talk) 12:25, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
After a long nap, Special:Contributions/Audit_Bee. 🐝 thingles (talk) 12:36, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
I always had the impression that sites do not get audited. Instead of looking at AuditBees edit log I relied on the result of the concept. That's really oops. Cool that is is up and running again. --[[kgh]] (talk) 15:05, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
